Shocker!

It took a while and I’m sure a few in the Reyes camp thought they had it but the numbers were elsewhere. O’Rourke beat Reyes with a positive message, progressive view and everything else El Paso wants to be. We are not mired in the past, we are moving forward.

November, here we come!

El Paso Election Day Information

Early voting this year was a huge success! In an article in the the El Paso Times they show that early voting is up 47%!  That’s amazing and I believe it really highlights the intrest in the Congressional race, underscoring the City’s quest for change and a new direction.  If, for some reason, you missed early voting, your last chance to have your voice heard will be on Tuesday the 29th.  Unlike early voting, where you could vote anywhere, on election day, you will be required to vote at your designated polling place.

To figure out where that is, you’ll need to know what your precinct number is. It’s on your voter registration card and if, like me, you have missplaced it you can look it up using this handy online tool supplied by the Beto for Congress site.  I would double check against the County Elections Department for accuracy.  You will need either you ID or your voter registration card to vote.

If you still need a good reason to vote Reyes out, here’s a little slice of the fear mongering that is the halmark of his campaign:

El Paso is better than this, make you voice heard and let’s vote Reyes out in a landslide!

Last Day of Early Voting in El Paso

It’s the Last day of early voting in El Paso.  If you haven’t gone out and supported your candidate that is not Reyes, now is your chance!

Kiss FM has an informal poll on their website but I wouldn’t be surprise if the Reyes supporters aren’t gaming the system and flooding it with extra votes.  if you want to cast your vote go here: Kiss FM Poll

Here’s a quick breakdown of early voting locations:

This race has rippled up to a national level, HuffPo and Fox News Latino (???) have some interesting articles worth checking out:

Silvestre Reyes Hit By Attack Ad In Primary, Tosses Allegation At Challenger Beto O’Rourke

Texas Congressman Faces Questions over Political Donations from Alleged Trafficker

If you are still needing reasons to cast your vote against Reyes, head over to the Article Archives, I’ve added some more articles.

Now for something different, here’s some of my favorite “Vote” themed music videos:

International Microwave Redux

A new ad just released by the O’Rourke Campaign highlights the International Microwave shenanigans by our favorite congressman  Sly “Don’t-attack-my-family-even-though-I-hire-them” Reyes.

I’ve put together a post and some links on this before, here and in my Articles page.  The El Paso Times fact checked the ad as well:

Beto O’Rourke ad says Silvestre Reyes focuses mainly on self, family

The Reyes Camp will gripe and moan about pulling his family into the campaign but you know he’s the one that hired them into the limelight.  We have had 16 years of this kind of nepotism and backroom cronyism politics and its time for a change.

I wonder how Reyes will spin this one, he has already tried to claim “as a U.S. Border Patrol chief convinced him of the need for electronic surveillance.”  I think he needs something more creative as his reason for doing it:

And if you don’t know, know your meme people!

Guest Post by David Nevarez (part2)

After visiting Reyes’ office several times last year for assistance with my VA disability claim, my requests were left unresolved.  On his April 25th Posting “Reyes Works”, Mr. Reyes, who says he is a Veteran himself, questions my time in service! As a result, the following day I had to show my DD214 (discharge papers) to an El Paso Times Reporter, Chris Roberts.

A Veteran never questions a fellow Veteran’s time in service – period! Reyes failed to appear at a Veteran sponsored debate on April 14th after confirming at the 60-day, 30-day, two week and 24 hour mark.  This, in my opinion, shows Reyes’ lack of concern for the Veterans in El Paso.

There are many stories like mine.  After my ratings physical, several X-rays highlighted problems with my lower back.  The recommendation was to see my primary care doctor at the VA. Even with instructions explaining the urgency of this problem, the VA could not see me until mid July.  Situations like this are how our current Veterans are being treated and, until improved, those new to the system will experience the same.

It has taken an election year to raise awareness for a much needed Veterans Hospital. Reyes has access to the numbers showing its viability, yet he chooses to side step the issue. Nationwide, a severe backlog of disability claims has clogged the system and 10 years of war are only going to add to the problem long term.

These ongoing issues are important and Reyes, as well as other officials, should not be surprised when they get voted out of office for their inability to lead.

Guest Post by David Nevarez (part1)

In a Veteran Affairs & Installation meeting on May 21st 2012 Congressman Reyes stated “El Paso does not have the population for a VA Hospital”.  The research is provided by Carlos Rivera, who has over 20 years experience working with Veterans Affiars as well as the Vet Center here in El Paso.  Here are the numbers:

Total Population Veteran Population
Albuquerque, NM 545,852 56,148
Waco, Tx 124,805 17,934
Big Springs, Tx 25,233 2,867
Kerville, Tx 22,826 6,561
Bonham, Tx 10,127 3,812
El Paso, Tx 800,647 80,000
As you can see, Bonham who has the lowest in population has a VA Hospital as well as Alburquerque which is comparable to El Paso.  Right now a Veteran who has a need for MRI’s ect are required to drive to a VA Hospital, keep in mind the age of the WWII, Korean War and Vietnam Veterans, who will be liable should they get into an accident?
I recently had a physcial for a ratings increase, there is a team that travels from South Carolina to Arizona that conducts these physicals, how much money is spent monthly for this team to travel from state to state, city to city?  When these services can be done here or any city for that matter eliminating the need for an evaluation team travelling and boosting the ecomony.

KVIA Debate and Other Notes

If you missed it here are the links the the Congressional Debate that was hosted by KVIA Extra:

Part 1, Part 2, Part 3

A few things to take away from this, Reyes sure loves to use “First and Foremost” a lot.  That’s one of my biggest criticisms of Reyes, his public speaking is abhorrent.  He interjects catch phases between uh and um’s in an attempt to string his ideas together and it comes across all herky-jerky and incomplete.  This is what has passed for our representation over the last 16 years?  Unacceptable!

Reyes’ answer to the bridge question was pretty confusing. It’s funny that he sites Google as his proof that a bridge is supposedly imminent in the Yarbrough area.  As a member of Congress wouldn’t he have access to “real” information on the subject and not have to resort to Google? He also did a little dance around the gay marriage issue and almost got away with not answering it till Hunt pinned him down.

This local congressional election is certainly one of the most interesting in a long time.  The divide at the local democratic level is oddly paralleled at the national level.  The El Paso Inc has an article up that talks about this local divide and its implications titled: El Paso’s Democratic Divide.  I think it can be summed up simply as “Old Vs New”, “Progressive Vs Status Quo.”

Anti-incumbency is also powering this divide and some of the first anti Reyes adds are starting to hit the airways.  Its good stuff, I hope they blast out some more:

This is the last week of early voting, and its going to be a tight race. Exit polls are showing the race to be “neck and neck” so it’s more important than ever to go out and vote.  Lets give Reyes the retirement he deserves!

Time to call in the Wrecking Crew

I was adding to the article archives today and decided to review a couple.  I think its time to post some of the “Greatest Hits” of Reyes.  Now who could forget, way back in 2010; what a magical time that was so long ago.  Cobos and Gandara were still on Commissioners Court, untainted by public corruption.  Our Congressman was doing his best for his “constituents” that mean the most…his family.

Back then Sheriff Richard Wiles put out a bid, seeking a single company to handle all of towing for the county. In the past, 7 company’s had the contract which left the system open to corruption.  The bid was put out to consolidate and trim costs.  Usually that’s a good thing.  AD towing was awarded the contract, towing the cars for less than half of what the other seven wrecker companies had been charging on average.

According to the Times:

“On Sept. 7th  Reyes sent a letter to Cobos, saying that Carrasco and “several of his associates” want the commissioners to review their decision to contract with AD Wrecking. The letter does not say that Carrasco is Reyes’ brother-in-law, but it does ask commissioners to help him.”

“Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated,” the letter says. “I look forward to hearing from you soon.”

It doesn’t matter if its better for the tax payer, its family first.  That’s how you get things done at Reyes Wrecking service!

I have the International Microwave Blues

It looks like Silver’s International Microwave hi-jinks are coming back to haunt him.  The El Paso Times has a article up that breaks down the interconnected dealings of the Congressman, his family and the no-contract bid for surveillance equipment that failed miserably.

Tom Barry from the Newspaper Tree covered this back in 2009 and the failings of the equipment have been detailed at length all over the web. Over the years Reyes has pulled in some serious donations from major Defense industry players:

Campaign Contributions, 2005-2006:

Echostar Communications Corporation PAC Inc $2000
L-3 Communications Corporation Political Action Committee $3000
General Dynamics Voluntary Political Contribution Plan (GDVPCP) $6000
Lockheed Martin Employees’ Political Action Committee $6000
Boeing Political Action Committee $6000
Raytheon Company Political Action Committee $9000

Campaign Contributions, 2003-2004:

L-3 Communications Corporation Political Action Committee $5000
Echostar Communications Corporation PAC Inc $5500
Boeing Political Action Committee $7000
Employees of Northrup Grumman Corporation PAC $7500
General Dynamics Voluntary Political Contribution Plan (GDVPCP) $9000
Lockheed Martin Employees’ Political Action Committee $10000
Raytheon Company Political Action Committee $10000

We all know how much Silverface likes the defense industry.  In a nutshell his hiring of his daughters with no oversight cost the taxpayers millions!  I bet Doc Reyes wishes he had a time machine to travel back in time and hide this taxpayer debacle.

If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 200 million dollars… you’re gonna see some serious shit!
